Furnace installation and replacement

A new furnace, the venting that goes with it, and the ductwork nobody looks at until it stops working.

Signs it is time

Rust at the base of the cabinet. A burner flame that lifts and rolls instead of sitting still. Repairs twice in one winter. A furnace old enough that the parts come from a specialist rather than from the van.

Any one of them on its own is a conversation. Two of them together usually means the money is better spent on the next furnace than on this one.

A new gas furnace and evaporator coil in the same laundry closet after replacement, venting reworked.

Before and after

The same closet, twice

An old natural-draft furnace sharing a chimney with another gas appliance, replaced by a condensing furnace that vents through its own pipe.

The venting is the part that has to be redesigned when that change is made, not adapted. A chimney sized for two appliances behaves differently once only one is left in it.

An old gas furnace in a laundry closet beside a washer and a storage tank, before replacement.

The same closet before the work.

Ductwork, venting and make-up air

A furnace can only move the air the ducts let it move, so a replacement is the right moment to look at what it is connected to. Crushed flex in an attic, a return that is half the size it should be, a run added during a remodel and never sized: those cost more in comfort than the efficiency rating on the new furnace will ever win back.

Make-up air belongs in the same conversation. A large kitchen hood can pull more air out of a house than the house can replace on its own, and when it does, the air comes back down whatever flue is handy. We have installed a powered make-up air unit for exactly that, with the filter section put in the garage so it can be changed in two minutes.

What customers wrote

His price was very reasonable compared to other estimates we received. The installation was clean, professional, and everything was explained clearly.

Furnace replacement questions

How long does it take?

One day for most straight replacements. Reworking the venting or the plenum can push it into a second day, and we will say which one yours is before we start.

What size furnace do I need?

Not necessarily the size of the one coming out. Houses get insulated, windows get replaced, and additions get built, and the old furnace is often larger than the house now needs.

Can you add a humidifier at the same time?

Yes, and it is much cheaper done together than as a separate visit, because the plenum is already open.

What about the permit?

Several of the villages we work in require one for a furnace replacement. We will tell you what yours asks for before the work is scheduled.

The age of the furnace and a photo of the nameplate is a good start.
