Before you call anyone
If you smell gas, or the CO alarm is going off
Smell gas? Leave the house and call Nicor Gas from outside.
CO alarm going off? Get everyone out and call 911.
Those two are not HVAC calls. The gas utility and the fire department are equipped for them and they come for free. Call us afterwards, once the house is safe.

High-efficiency furnaces
Half the no-heat calls on a modern furnace are the venting
A condensing furnace vents through plastic pipe and drains its own condensate. Both of those freeze, block and sag, and when they do the pressure switch stops the furnace on purpose. It looks like a dead furnace and it is usually a dead vent.
It is worth checking the outdoor terminations yourself after a heavy snow.

Heating questions
The furnace stops after a few minutes. Can I do anything before you get here?
Change the filter and open every supply register you have closed. A furnace starved of airflow overheats and shuts itself off, and that is a five-minute fix you should not have to pay for.
Is a cracked heat exchanger always a replacement?
Nearly always, yes, and it is the one diagnosis we will show you rather than tell you. If a company condemns a heat exchanger without letting you see it, get a second opinion.
Repair or replace?
Age, the cost of the part, and whether the rest of the furnace is on the same clock. We will give you the repair number and the replacement number and let you choose.
