Dryer vent cleaning: when to schedule it and what to check

A clean lint screen is a good start. The vent to the outdoors needs attention too. Here is what to watch for and what to ask before booking a cleaning.

A clean lint screen is part of dryer maintenance, but it does not tell you whether the exhaust path to the outdoors is clear. Lint and restrictions in that path can affect drying and fire safety. The U.S. Fire Administration identifies failure to clean as the leading contributing factor in the home clothes-dryer fires reported for 2018-2020. U.S. Fire Administration

How often should the vent be cleaned?

Start with the instructions for your dryer model and the condition of its vent. Whirlpool's general support guidance recommends cleaning exterior-vented systems every one to two years, or when drying performance declines. It notes that laundry frequency, the items being dried and pet hair affect the interval. A date on the calendar should not delay attention to a problem that appears sooner. Keep a simple maintenance record with the service date, what was checked and any follow-up recommended. When arranging the next visit, explain how often the dryer runs and whether its performance has changed.

Signs worth checking

Clothes that take longer than usual to dry can point to restricted airflow. On Whirlpool models, a "Check Vent" indicator signals an airflow restriction; a "Clean Lint Screen" reminder is a different message. A visibly crushed connector behind the appliance or a blocked exterior hood also deserves attention. These observations help describe the problem; they are not a complete appliance diagnosis. From a safe, accessible position, you can check whether the outside vent cover opens while the dryer operates. Do not climb onto a roof or dismantle the appliance to make this check. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends professional installation and servicing. USFA dryer safety checklist

Everyday care between visits

Clean the lint filter before and after each cycle, and never run the dryer without it. Keep an eye on accessible venting for damage or crushing. Cleaning the filter does not replace checking the rest of the venting system. If access requires moving a heavy appliance, working on a gas connection or opening the dryer, arrange professional help. If your HOA asks for yearly cleaning

Ask the association or property manager for its written requirement before booking. Four details are worth confirming:

  • The deadline for completing the cleaning.
  • Who arranges the visit and which parts of the vent are included.
  • Who coordinates access to exterior or shared building areas.
  • What proof is needed: an invoice, service report or association form.

Send the written requirements to the service provider in advance. An invoice, report and association form may serve different purposes, so clarify which document is needed. This helps avoid a second visit just for missing paperwork.

Treat the association's instructions as requirements for your particular property. This guide does not establish an annual HOA requirement for every home.
